Writing finance content for different intent
Keywords have different intent behind them, and therefore analysing this intent is crucial when you’re looking at the right keywords to target. Intent informs any good strategy – without looking closely at intent, you run the risk of ranking for things that might not bring the right traffic to your site and, in other words, the right people who you’d hope to be potential clients or customers.
When looking at intent, it’s important to think like your ideal customer – what would they want to know? If they’re close to the point of purchase, what would they like to see? If they’re asking a question (a long-tail keyword) and want some more information before completing a purchase, what additional information would they need?
If you have a keyword and want to know what intent lies behind it, you can simply Google that keyword to see what comes up in the SERPs. Is it all informational? Or is it more commercial?
Google now holds intent in very high regard – the Helpful Content Update of September 2022 saw Google place great importance on useful, relevant content. As such, providing content that matches the user intent is vital here.
Informational (usually through blog content e.g. help guides)
This line of intent essentially pertains to users wanting to know more about something – in other words, they are seeking information. In the context of finance, this might be information about different types of business insurance, the benefits of asset finance, or the process of starting up a business using a business loan.
Based on the specifics of this intent, Google will change its SERPs to deliver users the relevant information that they need. For instance, if users are looking for a ‘how to’ guide, Google might display a video as the top result on the page.
Other examples of informational queries include:
- ‘best cryptocurrency to invest in’
- ‘stocks how to invest’
- ‘how to become an accountant’
Transactional (e.g. product pages)
A transactional query is usually from a user that intends to make a purchase. By the time a user comes to make this query, they’re likely in a position to know what they want to buy, and are therefore prepared to buy it relatively soon.
As such, many transactional keywords are simply just product names.
This transaction mainly pertains to eCommerce businesses – if you sell products online, you need to make sure you’re tapping into this intent and targeting keywords that are transactional queries.
Commercial (e.g. guide pages ‘best X for…’)
Commercial intent lies somewhere between information and transactional. These types of queries are usually from users that are interested in making a purchase but just need some more information first before making a final decision.
As such, the people that fall into this category usually just need more convincing that a certain product is good and right for them. With that in mind, it’s up to your site to deliver relevant, informational content that gives them all of the information that they need to make them feel educated and confident in their purchasing decision.
By delivering this content to them, users are more likely to remember your brand when the time comes to make a purchase, given that you were there serving them information when they were higher up the buyer funnel.
