How it works: YouTube has changed how public view counts work on long-form videos & live streams, counting a view as soon as playback starts rather than after a set watch time – matching how Shorts, TikTok and Instagram already count views. The previous metric has been renamed “Engaged views” and remains in YouTube Analytics.
What’s the benefit? View counts will grow faster, giving a better picture of reach. However, as monetisation still relies on engagement-based metrics, brands & creators should track engaged views and watch time to judge true performance, and be careful when comparing view numbers before and after 24 August.
