How to stay creative while working from home

It goes without saying that most of us have spent a lot more time working from home than expected in 2020. The team here at Embryo is no different. For eight months now, we have all been working remotely.

Digital marketing is a creative industry – whether you work in SEO, content, social media, digital PR, web design, PPC or anything else, clients expect you to bring forward thinking ideas to the table. But I’m probably not alone in saying that there have been moments over the last year where I have been sitting in front of my laptop, coffee in hand, scratching my head as to where to begin.

Staying creative all on your lonesome isn’t easy. Here are some tips that have helped me to stay creative while working from home in 2020.

1. Chat with your colleagues

One of the hardest things about staying creative at home is the lack of having your team around you. Many of us are at our best when we have people to bounce ideas off – how many of your best ideas have come during a meeting with your team?

Working from home is isolating, but this doesn’t need to stop you from collaborating with your colleagues. Book in some time for a brainstorm and invite some of your team members to chat with you about what you’re working on. Getting other people’s perspective on your thoughts can accelerate your creative thinking – while actually making it fun again.

The added bonus is that holding these kinds of meetings regularly will not just benefit your clients’ campaigns, but will give you all that teamwork and social time to keep everyone sane.

2. Get away from your computer

Anyone can tell you that taking short but frequent breaks helps you to get the most out of your day. But when you’re working from home, this is more important than ever. Your opportunity to get out into the world is slim to none during lockdown, but this doesn’t mean you should skimp on getting some time away from your screens.

Give your brain space to think and breathe by doing some exercise, cooking, household chores or something else – anything that gets you away from your computer. Working from home can be stressful, so it’s important to take care of yourself.

I tend to have my best ideas in the shower – is that weird?

3. Spend some time looking for inspiration

Ever seen a great marketing campaign and been struck with inspiration for something you can do for one of your own clients? It’s always good to take a dip in the creativity of others if your own is stalling.

If you are struggling for ideas, take a bit of time to look at what else is already out there. What are other people doing in your field, and what’s working and what isn’t? You might find an idea that you can improve upon in your own work, or you might find another way to break through your creative block.
