I want to take a moment for us all to relax, to just stop the daily grind, just for a minute. Most of us probably use Google on a daily basis, many people will use it multiple times a day. According to statcounter Google has over 90% of the market share now.

There wasn’t any point putting a legend on, you can’t make out the difference between the other 18 SERPs that Statcounter tracks. The point is, that A LOT of people use Google. 

If you think about the sheer amount of people that work or have worked for Google in the past you’d think that one of them would have thought of something fun to do. Luckily enough they do make side shows to compliment the business model they use in the form of Google Easter Eggs. Not the chocolatey type of goodness we all enjoy during easter. As described by the urban dictionary;

A hidden item placed in a movie, television show, or otherwise visual media for close watchers.

Originates from the 1975 movie “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” when the cast had an easter egg hunt but most of the eggs went unfound. They can be seen throughout the film in various locations ( such as under Frank N. Furter’s throne).

How Can You Find Some Google Easter Eggs?

It would be a fairly difficult task to collect all of them without any prior knowledge of where each one is hidden. A lot of them exist for a short period of time in conjunction with topical special occasions, like World Hugging Day for example. Some get saved and stored in a back catalogue but the ones listed here today are all available at the time of publication.

So without further adieu I give you some of my favourite hidden Easter Eggs Google has come up with over the years. 

1: Askew

Despite being very simplistic, it was my first encounter with a Google Easter Egg. Just type askew directly into the Omnibox and hit enter to give it a go. Without trying to give too much away your screen is tilted slightly, just like the word askew means.

2: Pacman

Sometimes Google will make small games to keep you occupied for a while. Type in “pacman” to get started yourself. See if you can beat my high score of 1480, it might not be very hard to be honest. I was never very good at Pacman.

3: Joey Tribbiani

It’s not all about creating games and making World Hugging Day special, Google will often hide easter eggs right under your nose. Through curiosity, some people will find things like these. Search for “Joey Tribbiani” and click on the pizza slice in his knowledge graph. Quick tip, turn up the volume before you do if you want the best out of this one. If you search for the other Friends cast by their screen names you’ll find a treat for each one. Like an expert shogun swordsman, he nips out and grabs his food.

4: Google Assist’s Got Jokes

I use this feature with my daughter quite a bit, despite the jokes being terrible, she on the other hand loves them. If you have Google assistant on your phone then activate it and just ask it to tell you a joke. Google assist has plenty of other tricks up her sleeve too. Go ahead and ask her if she can rap and see just what i mean. If it doesn’t put a smile on your face we cannot be friends.

If one were so inclined you can set it to send you jokes at the same time on a daily basis.

5: Google Earth Engine Timelapse

This treat isn’t much of a Google Easter Egg, it’s still quite well hidden though. Google has been collecting images for decades, they’ve put together a collection of time-lapse showing selected regions of the world’s development. It’s quite cool to see how much we as a species are changing the landscape of our planet.
